Regular Check-Ups and Dental Cleanings

Finding an office to provide your child with exceptional dental care that is both effective and comfortable can seem like a big responsibility. At Burleson Pediatric Dentistry, we offer the best dental care in a caring and compassionate environment so that your child has a good foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles!

Since we work only with children, we are uniquely equipped to help them feel comfortable and anxiety-free while they are with us. Our office is playful, bright, and interactive, making their dental appointments a fun learning experience.

We explain procedures to your children in language they will understand so it does not feel scary for them. Because our staff is expertly trained and experienced in pediatric dentistry, we work comfortably and at your child’s pace so that they learn to enjoy their dental appointments and look at them as part of their normal health care routine.

Regular Check-Ups

Dental decay is the number one chronic disease affecting young children in America today. In many cases, this condition is preventable with proper oral hygiene and regular check ups. We monitor the health of your child from their first birthday to look for potential challenges when it comes to dental caries (decay) or other common conditions. By maintaining regular check-ups, we can prevent many conditions from developing and treat them while they are smaller, less expensive, and easier to manage.

At your child’s exam, Dr. Chris Walton will gently examine your child’s teeth, gums, and development. He will keep you informed about any potential conditions and work with you, as the parent, on home care techniques, nutritional counseling, and what to expect as your child grows.

Professional Dental Cleanings

Aside from consistent and thorough home care, the best way to prevent decay is for your little one to have regular professional dental cleanings. No matter how thoroughly you brush your child’s teeth, food and plaque still collect in the hard-to-reach areas like between your child’s teeth and just beneath the gum line.

Our hygienists are gentle, thorough, and make each experience in our office a great one for kids. We offer encouragement and rewards, and make sure they feel comfortable so they will want to keep coming back for future appointments. We even have TVs at each chair so your child can watch their favorite show during their appointment!

Removing plaque and bacteria with professional dental cleanings helps to prevent decay and gum disease. We can also discuss brushing techniques once your child is old enough so that they can participate and learn to take ownership in their own oral care.

Frequently Asked Questions

Children have unique needs that require a special type of attention. From the language we use to the kid-sized equipment in our office, we are prepared to give your child the specialized care they deserve.

Pediatric dentists spend additional time in dental school to learn the skills and methods to effectively treat young patients. Because kids are still growing, they encounter unique challenges that adults don’t have to face. Pediatric dentists possess a knowledge base about growth anomalies and children's oral health issues that general dentists often are not aware of. Dr. Walton chose to work with kids because he truly cares. He treats each of our patients like he would want his own children to be treated.

In addition to the treatment differences between a pediatric dentist and family dentist, our office is designed just for kids! It is modern, brightly colored, and has a TV at every chair location. To keep your kids entertained, we have toys, games, iPads, and a fun interactive style. We encourage curiosity because we understand that children’s brains are always absorbing information.

Dr. Walton is extremely gentle and will make sure that your child receives the personalized treatment he or she needs based on their own individual oral health needs. We go at your child’s pace and monitor their attention spans so that each experience is a positive one.

You might think it’s no big deal if your child prematurely loses a baby tooth, also known as a primary tooth. After all, they have plenty of other teeth for chewing, right? In addition to chewing and speaking, baby teeth serve another important purpose. They hold the space for your child’s permanent tooth until it emerges.

When a baby tooth has untreated decay or infection, it can spread to their permanent tooth below.

Typically, children do not lose their baby teeth until their permanent teeth are ready to erupt through the gums. As the permanent tooth grows up through the gums, the baby tooth becomes more unstable and eventually falls out on its own. Sometimes, wiggling and playing with the loose tooth can expedite the process.

Your child’s baby tooth keeps space in the jaw for your child’s permanent tooth to emerge in the proper location. When trauma or deep decay requires the removal of a baby tooth, the permanent tooth no longer has it as a guide. While it is often possible that your child will still have no problems with their permanent teeth, sometimes they can grow in incorrectly or misaligned.

Preventing decay with brushing, flossing, and routine dental hygiene appointments will help ensure your child’s smile is healthy and functional. If your child has an accident and loses a baby tooth, give us a call.
