In-Office Sedation Dentistry
Sometimes children feel extremely anxious when it’s time for them to have dental treatment. While we work well with children and can put them at ease, sometimes they need help to relax while they are in the dental chair.
At Burleson Pediatric Dentistry, we offer several forms of in-office sedation to give our patients a more relaxed dental experience. These options can also work well for patients with special needs who have difficulty remaining still and cooperative for their necessary treatment.
Nitrous Oxide Sedation
One of the safest and mildest forms of sedation is nitrous oxide. Nitrous oxide is an odorless, inhaled gas that we mix with oxygen to administer through a nose mask. We control the amount of sedation during treatment and can make adjustments as necessary to ensure a relaxed procedure.
Nitrous oxide enters and leaves the system quickly so your child will feel completely normal within moments after their treatment. It has few side effects and is very safe for patients. We will ask you a few simple questions prior to your child’s appointment to make sure that nitrous oxide is a good option for them.
Because of its mild nature, nitrous oxide works well for patients who are mostly cooperative, but might feel slightly stressed or overwhelmed during treatment.
Conscious Oral Sedation
If your child needs additional help to feel comfortable and cooperative for their treatment, oral conscious sedation may be beneficial.
Conscious oral sedation requires liquid medication that your child will drink at their scheduled appointment. While your child will be conscious, he or she will feel more relaxed and drowsy during treatment. This is beneficial for youngsters who need a significant amount of treatment to restore their dental health. Because they will feel completely relaxed, we can accomplish more treatment during this appointment.
We will perform a medical history and evaluation to ensure that oral sedation medication is safe for your child so that they can have comfortable, efficient, and anxiety-free dental care that will help support good oral health.
IV Sedation Dentistry
For our young patients who have extreme anxiety, developmental disabilities, or behavioral issues, we offer IV sedation in our office that is administered and monitored by an anesthesiologist. Because it is administered through the bloodstream, IV sedation allows us to control the level of sedation during treatment and make necessary adjustments for the strength and duration of sedation.
This allows children, who otherwise could not have dental care, to receive the treatment they need to have a comfortable and functional smile.
